"I never thought I would need psycho-meow-isis"

Skin picking is now finally included in the recently revised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) of the American Psychiatric Association, as a disorder in the chapter on Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders. Skin picking disorder affects far too many people for it to have gone officially unrecognized for this long. Perhaps now there will begin to be more research on it, and more awareness. How many of us have suffered, feeling ashamed, thinking we were the only person in the world who did this?Great news yet, in my opinion, psychiatry's emphasis on pharmaceuticals for treatment is extremely limited. If any of you are hoping for a pill alone to make you stop your body focused repetitive behavior, I predict you will be waiting a long, long time (forever?). I believe balancing the body and mind through natural means is much more powerful, and that, as Ayurvedic medical expert Dr. David Frawley says in his book, Ayurveda and the Mind, "True awareness is the ultimate cure for all psychological disorders."If you are up for the work it takes to stop picking, I am here to support you as you learn to do it.
